Gebruik:
Taak, bevel, noodzaak
Present simple : must en have to : v.b. I must get up at 7 a.m.
Alle andere tijden vorm met have to: v.b. We had to leave early.
Logische gevolgtrekking
Present simple: must: v.b. He has worked hard so he must be tired.
Past: must have: v.b.So you have just returned from Aruba. That must have been a great holiday.
Eigenlijk moeten = wat gewenst is maar niet gebeurt
Present simple: ought to of should: v.b. You should not complain so much
Past: should have of ought to have: v.b. You should have gone to the police.
Kunnen: (Can/could/be able)
In staat zijn:
Present simple: can/ able to : v.b. I can speak English
Past simple could / was able: v.b. I was able to understand her.
Alle andere tijden: have never been/ will be able: v.b. I’ve never been able to do maths. Who will be able to help you if necessary.
Mogelijk zijn:
Present simple: can: v.b. It can be very cold here
Past simple He could be a real bore at times.
Toestemming:
Present simple: Can: v.b. Can I call you then?
Past simple: could: v.b. He asked if he could go.
